What is Hentai?
"Hentai" means "pervert" in Japanese. In English, the term is used to mean Japanese porn in animated or comic-book (manga) form. The Japanese create a lot of porn, including unlicensed pornography involving characters from animated shows (anime hentai), comic books (manga hentai), video games (video game hentai). There's something about sexy anime girls, there's no doubt about it. And, according to the fangirls, there's something about hot anime guys, too. Cartoon sex is accepted in Japan, and this kind of porn is sold openly. (Imagine what Disney would do if hentai using their characters started appearing on U.S. newsstands! Doujinshi (Fan Hentai Pictures and Comics)
Printed hentai comic books are called "hentai doujinshi." Most are made by fans for their own amusement, though the production values are usually fully up to professional standards. These works are unlicensed and generally don't carry copyright notices, for obvious reasons. In Japan, these comics are written and distributed openly. The hot anime babes and sexy anime guys in these works can be irresistable, though often the works are plot-free (not unusual in porn, of course.)
Few of these have been translated into English, though some have. Usually the translated versions are available only online. The average hentai is long on heavy porn action and short on clever dialog, so in many cases this hardly matters. But it would be nice to have translations for the more comical, romantic, or complex works. These works are available in printed form. I have bought them from both Japanese and domestic sellers. Titles come and go. Because these are fan works and no one's making money on them, they don't stay in print long, and used copies can be hard to find.
